Salam!
I’m Mohammad Alem.

Long bio short, I’m a brand identity and UI designer, with a penchant for Arabic typography and lettering. I recently moved from Kabul to Alameda, California, and am raring to kickstart my life and career anew.
I’m from Afghanistan, born and raised in Kabul. I spent my spare time watching Bob Ross draw on TV during my school years which sparked my enthusiasm to start drawing. And then, when I came across Alibaba Awrang’s1 calligraphy masterpieces, that was it, as they say: I didn’t choose design, it chose me :-)... I owe my design knowledge, besides self-study and practice, to the handful of online courses and workshops I’ve attended in the last five years.

Experience.
My professional background is mostly in brand identity design. After working at various studios with startups, I went to do UI design at Netlinks2 from 2018 to 2021. I also took freelance jobs in magazines, packaging, and illustration.

Languages.
I’m fluent in Persian, Pashto, and English, and have a bachelor’s in Spanish Literature from Kabul University.

Beyond routine.
I love researching and experimenting with Arabic and Latin types which I share on Instagram, Dribbble, and Bēhance.

Now. I’m currently using my UI design knowledge with AIDrivers, a UK-based company “developing AI-enabled autonomous mobility solutions”.
